Martigues, the Venice of Provence
Martigues, also known as the Venice of Provence, owes its popular nickname to one of its geographical features. Criss-crossed by canals, the town offers a panorama reminiscent of a master painting. Its small, colourful fishermen’s houses and fleet of traditional boats only add to the town’s charm.
Here, the colours blend with the blue of the sky and the water, transporting passers-by on a unique sensory journey. This neighbourhood has inspired many painters, notably Félix Ziem, who set up his studio here. 🎨
Feel free to take a stroll and let yourself be carried away by this unique atmosphere.
Martigues also boasts a rich heritage: the Church of Sainte-Madeleine, a fine example of Provençal Baroque architecture; the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde, which overlooks the town and offers superb views of the Étang de Berre lagoon; and finally the Fort de Bouc, which guards the mouth of the Caronte Canal.
